At first glance, the machining or measurement of cubic workpieces seems to be more straightforward than that of rotationally symmetric parts. With this engine block, however, the gage has to withstand a weight of no less than 45 kg, which has to be concentrically aligned on a cast contour in a reproducible manner. That is why the problem is the design layout and structure of this mechanism. Here, several linear dimensions are measured, plus index bores, to be measured by means of special hand-held measuring instruments.
The fact that the measuring table is being installed in China does not exactly make things any easier in terms of project management. Special attention was directed to straightforward operation. Merely two levers are required to perform the measurement. An interlocking mechanism prevents operating errors. The sequence of all measurements is specified by the measuring computer.
